Common Questions
Can I put a copper pot on any chimney?
Copper pots are designed for masonry chimneys with a defined flue opening at the crown. They are not the right product for prefab or zero-clearance fireplace chase systems, which use a different termination entirely. On masonry, the pot needs a sound crown to seat on. If the crown is spalled or cracked, repair it before installation or the water problem will continue regardless of the pot material.
Will a pot help if I smell smoke in the house?
Sometimes. Smoke odor in summer is usually a draft reversal problem caused by the house being depressurized by air conditioning. A pot can reduce that tendency. How long does installation take?
A straightforward cap replacement takes one to two hours. A copper pot installation on a crown that needs minor preparation runs two to four hours. If the crown needs rebuilding first, that is a separate visit because the mortar needs cure time before seating a pot. What about animals already inside?
Install nothing over a flue with active animals inside. This is a common mistake. Does copper affect the fire or gas appliance performance?
